Charity Event @ Willing Hearts

Willing Hearts is a secular, non-affiliated charity, wholly run by volunteers, apart from a handful of staff. It operates a soup kitchen that prepares, cooks and distributes about 7,000 daily meals to over 70 locations island wide, 365 days a year. For over two decades, Willing Hearts has been providing nutritious meals and essential support to individuals in need, such as the elderly, the disabled, low income families, children from single parent families or otherwise poverty stricken families, and migrant workers in Singapore.

Willing Hearts is a registered as a society with the Ministry of Home Affairs since February 2005 and as a charity with the Ministry of Ministry of Social and Family Development since December 2008.

In this one-day volunteering event, Kenneth and Janice contributed to preparing at least 200 loaves of bread that will go on to feed hundreds of underprivileged or marginalized individuals.

"One of our target groups are the otherwise unseen homeless individuals and families of Singapore. Despite being known for its economic success and efficient infrastructure, homelessness is an issue that Singapore continues to grapple with. While Singapore has made significant strides in providing affordable housing and social support systems, there remains a segment of the population that finds itself without a permanent place to call home."

Various factors such as eviction from rental units, job loss, financial difficulties, family breakdowns, and mental health issues, contribute to the rise of homelessness in Singapore. Contrary to common misconceptions, homelessness affects individuals from different backgrounds and age groups, emphasizing the need for comprehensive solutions.

While homelessness is not just a housing issue, it underscores the importance of holistic support and collaborative efforts between the government, community organizations, and volunteers to address the multifaceted needs of the homeless population and help individuals break the cycle of homelessness and regain stability with dignity. Oftentimes, these social enterprises, such as Willing Hearts, rely mainly on volunteers to keep their operations running.
